Tree planting
This is not as simple as it sounds. There are more than a hundred thousand young trees of many varieties in our nearby plantation. It takes a lot of knowledge to plant trees properly, finding the best locations regarding amount of sun, water needs, proper soil balance and nutrients, etc. Armed with a machete, you can help cut the large and fast-growing weeds, fertilize trees, and register growth and/or any problems. It is very educational and you will be able to experience for yourself the value of the local workers and a hard day’s work in the hot sun! It is not easy to plant a new jungle and we can certainly use your help.

A pick-up will transport visitors to one of our planting areas at 8am until 4pm. Lunch will be delivered to visitors. Some activities are seasonal (dry or rainy season).

  • Prepare ground for planting and fertilizing (rainy season only)
  • Pruning trees (tools provided)
  • Laying down mulch
  • Manual clearing of area (machetes will be provided – work gloves as well)
Plant Nursery
Treat yourself to the joys of working with seeds, seedlings and cuttings in our very own nursery. Here you will learn how to handle these delicate little beginnings and nurture them to maturity. We even have an orchid house!

Visitors will be transported to the nursery located on the outside road of Samboja Lestari from 8am until 4pm. Lunch will be delivered to the nursery.

Activities in the nursery include:

  • Prepare medium for seedlings
  • Weeding
  • Grading seedlings and planting prep
  • Watering
  • Prepare seedlings for transport
  • (All gloves and tools will be provided)
Forest Research and Development
Observational data are an important part of our various projects. Scientific research helps us to gain a better knowledge and understanding of the individuals and the environment in our care, as well as helping us to monitor our successes and failures. Orangutans, bears, birds and other animals are observed, insects are collected, the stream speed of rivers and groundwater position and trees are surveyed, temperatures are measured, along with humidity, precipitation, etc. We have several researchers and experts from around the world working with us to collect this data, and you can help!

Visitors will be picked up at 8am and returned at 4pm. Lunch will be delivered to the site. Activities in Research and Forest Development include:

  • Measuring tree growth
  • water volume and velocity of water flow (Hydrology)
  • Checking temperature, precipitation and humidity (Meteorology)
  • (All necessary equipment will be provided)
