We have made a strong commitment to organic agriculture. The harvestable vegetables are fertilized with compost made on our premises. The produce is sprayed only with a biodegradable insecticide, which is also produced on site. The harvested products can be used for the orangutans, bears, other animals, as well as for Lodge guests! This is a wonderful opportunity for you to work together weeding, planting, and harvesting with project workers and local farmers.

A short walk from the Lodge is our Organic Farming Patch. Activities will begin at 8am and continue until 4pm. Lunch will be delivered to the visitors so they can enjoy eating together with the technicians. Activities include:

  • Preparing the ground for planting and actual planting
  • Fertilization
  • Watering
  • Harvesting
  • Weeding
  • Fencing (to prevent wild pigs from destroying the crops)
    Observation of growth
  • (All tools and work gloves will be provided)

Composting
Feeling adventurous? Join our compost team in the preparation and development of our compost materials. Don’t be fooled…compost is an all-important beginning to our forest regeneration program. From dirty beginnings to a beautiful end!

Visitors will be driven to our compost area at 8am and returned at 4pm. Lunch will be delivered. Activities include:

  • Preparation and separation of compost materials
  • Chopping and mixing
  • Drying materials
  • Making fertilizer
  • (Work gloves, masks and materials will be provided)

Lake Digging
There are several areas in Samboja Lestari where we have planned man-made lakes. These areas need to be dug out and all flora moved elsewhere (as the plants remain useful for other locations). Another tough muddy job, but well worth it for fresh water supplies. This lake building is part of a multi-reservoir project whereby Samboja Lestari will be supplying several local cities with their clean water supply.
