BOS, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, is most pleased to welcome you to our Samboja Lodge. We hope you will have an unforgettable visit here where you will experience, contribute to, and immerse yourself in the real day to day issues and problems we face in our fight for the conservation of the orang-utan and their habitat.

BOS is a non-profit organization whose mission statement is to:

BOS was established in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan in 1991. As the largest organization in the world working to save the orangutan, BOS projects currently take care of over 700 orangutans and employ about 300 people who have made a highly dedicated commitment to save the orangutan and its habitat.

The core of all BOS programs and projects is ensuring orangutan (and other wildlife) health and preservation of their habitat. Medically, BOS focuses on effective quarantine, careful disease screening and medical treatment to ensure orangutans are free of diseases, especially those that transfer easily between orangutans and humans (e.g., Hepatitis-B, TBC, etc.). We focus the same attention to sun bears and any animal in our care.

Orangutan socialization emphasizes orienting orangutans toward their own species and away from humans, so human contact beyond observation is strictly prohibited except for employees only. What may seem like small personal indulgences or accidents by visitors can have long-term consequences for others who work with orangutans, and most importantly, for the orangutans themselves. Toward that end, animal well being will always take priority over Lodge visitor requests.

As you are visiting a very large operational animal conservation and reforestation project which covers more than 4,000 acres (2,000 hectares), we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the following rules and procedures that will make your stay more pleasant and help us to take the best care of you and see to your safety while running our operation.

MOVING AROUND

The vast expanses of new forest in Samboja Lestari are teaming with new life, including more than 80 species of birds, but also some other animals like wild boar and snakes, that may pose some risk. It is also surprisingly easy to loose your way around our area. In order to avoid problems for yourself, our staff or the new forest, we kindly ask you to adhere to the following rules (details can be found in the Samboja Lodge handbook available in each room):

  • Always go with at least one other person for walks and please stay away from restricted areas
  • Do not go away from the roads and the paths network
  • Do not interact with the animals you encounter
  • Do not smoke except where you see ashtrays (on the lower level of the Lodge)
  • Please let Lodge staff know when you are leaving the immediate Lodge area. Remember it is always good if someone knows where you might be in case of unexpected events.
  • Bring enough water to drink when you are out and about, but do not consume anything in the presence of animals, and never litter
  • Wear clothes that provide protection against sun and insects and comply with the local dress code when leaving the guest facilities and please remove your shoes before entering Lodge rooms
  • Always follow directions given by BOS staff
  • Do not go to restricted areas without BOS staff. If you have permission to go unattended 9for example, a long term volunteer), you must have a letter from the project manager to show to the technicians before you can enter.

GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS

Under Indonesian regulations we have to provide the local police with a copy of your passport and report your arrival and departure dates. Copies of your passport and visa can be made at the Lodge.

RESPONSIBILITY
BOS is not responsible for visitors who act without authorization or for any physical injury or non-physical loss during visitor visits. We can only keep our visitors safe if they follow our rules and adhere to the information given by our staff. BOS refuses any responsibility for any possessions that go missing or are damaged during a visitor's stay.

PUBLIC IMAGE OF ORANGUTANS AND OTHER WILDLIFE
BOS and its visitors' goals should be to promote the image of orangutans and other wildlife living in their natural environment and functioning in their own culture

MISC.
When you have other requests or questions such as when you would like to hire a car, have special arrangements like excursions or help with onward trips, or more details on the above rules please consult the Lodge staff.
