There are four provinces that make up Kalimantan: East(Timur), South(Selatan), Central(Tengah) and West(Barat), each with its own governor.
Kalimantan Timur is home to the longest river in Kalimantan, the Mahakam river. The freshwater dolphin can be found swimming in its waters. East Kalimantan is a rapidly growing industrially advanced area, due to its being a major producer of oil and timber. It is also the second largest province in Indonesia and home to Kalimantan's indigenous inhabitants, the Dayaks.
Kalimantan Selatan is a rich, fertile province divided into two distinct regions by the Meratus Mountains. The eastern portion is covered mostly with mountains and dense tropical forest, while the southern portion has more rivers and lowlands. The unique natural resources found in this land can be seen from the exquisite traditional and commercial handicrafts made from local raw materials. Some of the most exciting ways to experience all this natural beauty is by backpacking over hills and/or racing down river on bamboo rafts.
Kalimantan Tengah covers an area of 153,800 square kms and consists mostly of dense jungles. This is the largest province of the island. The terrain includes mountainous areas to the north, dense tropical forests in the center, and peat swamp areas crisscrossed by many rivers to the south. As is found in other parts of the island, it has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 26 C to 30 C during the day and 15 - 20 C at night. It has an average humidity of 70 - 90%.
Kalimantan Barat is nicknamed 'land of the equator'. It earned this name because the capitol city of Pontianak lies exactly on the equator! Covering an area of 146,807 square km, the province has swampy low plains containing many rivers, lakes and villages, often linked by bridges. Once an important cultural crossroads, because of its strategic location in the trade routes of neighboring countries, this province is easily accessible from Jakarta and Singapore. Like other Kalimantan provinces, the land is rich in natural resources.
