Mawas conservation area administratively consists of two Regencies (South Barito and Kapuas), five Subdistricts and 58 villages (in which include dusun and RT ), comprising around 29,000 Households (KK) (as many as 12,180 KK locate in 12 surveyed villages).

The area consists of Block E1 of 181,743.7 ha and Block E2 of 242,437.5 ha. BOS Foundation has been granted a Principle Permission for Conservation Cooperation by the Governor for the use of Block E on the north of ex-PLG area, to be precise in north the Main Primary Channel 1 (SPI-1) and the Main Primary Channel 2 (SPI-2) of approximately 300,000 ha (from the total of 337,607 ha). Whereas until now Block AB is in the process of obtaining the permit due to different interest between Central Government and Local Government over its land use.

According to Local Regulation No. 8 Year 2003 Dated 20 September 2003 on Central Kalimantan Province Spatial Plan, the area proposed for the above Mawas Program implementation are mostly decided as Conservation area.

Why does Mawas conservation area need to be strongly legitimated by local and central government? Because inside Mawas area there is a high conservation value not only for Kalimantan and Indonesia, but also for the world. In this area there is "peat dome", with depth up to 20 metre more, rich for biomass and able to absorb high concentration of carbon which can keep the world climate from global warming.

There are about 3000 of orangutans (van Schaik et al, Population Habitat Viability Assessment - PHVA ) which are a nearly extinct creatures protected by laws. Mawas Program is dedicated to conserve orangutans and its habitat, while bringing benefit for the local society.

Besides, its biodiversity is also highly rich, with peat forest ecosystem. In this area it is planned to develop programs of Debt for Nature Swap and Carbon Offset Agreement involving active participation of local community and government. This kind of strategy will also be developed in other conservation areas within Central Kalimantan Province.

Community development through people support division and forestry & agroforestry have also become one of priorities of Mawas Program to prove to the community that conserving the forest will benefit them. Furthermore, Mawas Program also continues field activities (survey, research, limit order, etc.) as well as improves research camps management and service.
